Call for participation for Dutch trade mission to Central America
The Dutch Embassy will be present at the Rueda de Negocios-Centroamerica on 31st of March till 04th of April. The business meetings will take place in Guatemala and Costa Rica, where national and international businesses from the region can meet with 35 Dutch companies and government entities to exchange their supplies and demands needs, as well as the services and products in the following areas: public and private consultantcy, commerce, technologie, logistics, producers and buyers of fruits, plants and vegetables. The organization of this fair is in the hands of IDEAVELOP, Cadexco and Agexport with support from the EVD and the Dutch Embassy. De handel binnen de Gemeenschappelijke Middenamerikaanse Markt (MCCA) bereikte afgelopen jaar de USD 10.390 mln, een stijging van 17% ten opzichte van 2006. Guatemala was de grootste exporteur en verkocht in 2007 USD 1.871 mln méér dan het jaar daarvoor. Costa Rica is binnen de regio de tweede exporteur (USD 1.214 mln) gevolgd door El Salvador (USD 1.201 mln). El Salvador is de grootste ontvanger en neemt bijna 40% van de totale import voor zijn rekening. Gezamenlijk exporteerde de vijf landen gezamenlijk ruim USD 19 mld, een kleine 3 mld méér dan het voorgaande jaar hetgeen overeenkomt met een groei van 16,6%. Costa Rica gaat met 9 mld aan kop, gevolgd door Guatemala met 4,5 mld, Honduras (2,3 mld), El Salvador (2,2 mld) en Nicaragua (1 mld). De import nam toe met 13,5% waarmee het met USD 41 mld ruim het dubbele is van wat er werd geëxporteerd. De verwachting is dat de handel als gevolg van DR-Cafta en het Associatie-Akkoord met de EU zal toenemen. Wat betreft de vorderingen van implementatie van de douane-unie lopen Guatemala en El Salvador voorop. De landen hebben onderling reeds grotendeels hun tarieven geharmoniseerd.
Second round of negotiations for Association Agreement: CA-EU
The European Commission, negotiating on behalf of the European Union, and Central America will meet in Brussels from 25 to 29 February 2008 for a second round of negotiations in view of an Association Agreement, including free trade area between EU and CA.
Central American Summit
(Source: Prensa Latina) On February 20th the 31st Central American Summit was held in El salvador, where participants fostered integration and regional coordination mechanisms. Statesmen tried to tackle reforms for the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN), among them new legislation and resolutions that would be binding on all member countries. The gathering also analyzed the strengthening of the Central American Court of Justice and the negotiation process of the Economic Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union. The summit was attended by Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega, El Salvador's Antonio Saca, Belize' Prime Minister Dean Barrow, as well as Panama's Vice President Ruben Arosemena and delegations from Honduras, Costa Rica and Dominican Republic.
Petrocaribe expands membership to Guatemala
(Source: Prensa Latina) Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom stated his government is analyzing the possibility of joining the Petrocaribe energy initiative, boosted by Venezuela. The decision could be made within one or two weeks, Colom said during the Special Summit of the Central American Integration System in San Salvador. On his January visit to this capital for Colom's inauguration, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said that his country's energy potential is open to Guatemala through its entrance to Petrocaribe. That initiative emerged in 2005 to solve asymmetries in access to oil resources through a new favorable, equitable and fair exchange among the Caribbean basin countries. Among benefits are that nation members only have to pay 60-percent of the bill and the rest has a 25-year period of grace with interest of only 1%. The debt of Petrocaribe members with Venezuela has reached $1.16 billion in little more than a year of supplies, and is estimated to rise to $4.6 billion by 2010. Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Surinam, Venezuela, Haiti, Honduras and Nicaragua are currently members of the organization.
Alliantie supermarkten
Om de groeiende macht van de Amerikaanse supermarktketen Wal-Mart weerstand te kunnen bieden heeft een groep van 16 regionale supermarkten besloten de handen ineen te slaan. De alliantie Supermercados de Centroamérica y Panamá (SUCAP), gezeteld in El Salvador, zal in eerste instantie voornamelijk informatie en ‘best practices’ uitwisselen, maar het initiatief zal uiteindelijk ook moeten leiden tot het gezamenlijk aankopen van producten (schaalvergroting).
Samenwerking Brazilië duurzame energie
De Braziliaanse president Lula Da Silva zal eind mei in El Salvador samenkomen met zijn Middenamerikaanse tegenhangers in het kader van een samenwerkingsverband aangaande ontwikkeling van duurzame energieproductie zoals biobrandstoffen. De regio is in vergaande mate afhankelijk van de import van olie en daarmee hoogst kwetsbaar voor de almaar stijgende olieprijzen.
Toename toerisme
In 2007 kwamen er in total bijna 7,6 mln toeristen naar Midden Amerika, zo’n 550.000 méér dan het jaar daarvoor. Nicaragua zag de afgelopen twee jaar een toename van 25% in de komst van cruiseschepen. Costa Rica zag een sterke groei in toeristen afkomstig uit Europa en Spanje in het bijzonder. De groei in toerisme is de drijfveer voor verschillende investeringen, zowel in jachthavens, terminals voor cruiseschepen als luchthavens. Het is tevens een oorzaak van het groeiende aantal vluchten naar het continent.
